I love shooting colour film. So much so, that in 2019, I shot just one roll of black and white film. To say that I was underwhelmed with having to shoot HP5 first up for Frugal 2020 is an understatement.
All that changed one hot summer day in Brisbane when I was attending a couple of job interviews. T-shirt and shorts would be appropriate clothing, yet here I was walking around subtropical Brisbane in a suit.
Just as I was leaving the location of my last interview, a skyscraper on Eagle Street, I noticed the afternoon sun streaming in the windows of the first floor cafe, casting shadows and light everywhere.

I loaded up a roll of Ilford HP5 in my Olympus MJU I and something quite unexpected happened – I actually enjoyed shooting it. Like, really enjoyed shooting it! I walked around Brisbane that afternoon and shot a third of the roll in twenty minutes.
The image I’ve chosen this month was the third on the roll, taken near that first floor cafe. I love the textures and shapes of the architecture, wooden, glass and steel. I also love the palm trees outside the window, showing that a modern city has grown up in this subtropical location. Finally, this image sums up January for me: new challenges.
