Around October last year, I started planning a trip to the Philippines. The last time I was there was in 2015 for my grandmother’s funeral. The painful memory of my last visit made me lose interest in wanting to see my hometown again. In the past year, I had this longing to visit and be with family, and friends in the Philippines. I also felt that it was the right time for me to take a trip there.
I had a busy itinerary, and the first few days of my vacation were spent in Tokyo, and two weeks were spent travelling around the Philippines. I was in my hometown for four days, and I was planning to do a photowalk. Unfortunately, it mostly rained during my stay, so I was stuck indoors.
The photo I chose this month was the last photo I took of Ormoc City, the place where I was born and raised. I took this photo while waiting to board the ferry that will take me to Cebu. I am not sure when I’ll have another opportunity to visit and photograph this place again. I left the Philippines on March 13, just days before Metro Manila went into lockdown. I was able to safely return to Los Angeles, but the last few days of my vacation were stressful. I am so grateful that I was able to meet with family, and friends before the pandemic started.
